  • PAGE 92 Panel 1: Wide panel. We see Vanita's apartment complex at night. Panel 2: Wide panel. Closer in on the patio of Vanita's apartment. We hear from inside the apartment, "You mentioned a spell before dinner. One that can send people to the Pit... Panel 3: Wide panel. Closer in on the sliding glass door opening into Vanita's apartment. There's enough of a crack in the curtain for the speech bubble to come through. Vanita asks, "...Do you remember any of it?" Panel 4: Inside the apartment. We see the blanket fort. Under the covering, King says, "Hmm..."

  • Panel 1: Wide panel, close up on Vanita. She says, “...I promise I’ll do what I can to get you back home.” Panel 2: Medium shot, King smiles sweetly at Vanita as they sit under the blanket fort. Panel 3: We see outside of the apartment now, but hear their conversation. King: Thank you, Vanita. Vanita: Of course! Now, what was that spell you – OH FUCK - King: What? Vanita: THE CHICKEN! King: Oh!

Panel 2: Looking over King’s shoulder, we see Vanita, her expression soft. Vanita: ...Back to the Pit? King nods. Panels 3 and 4 are stacked on top of each other, and show Vanita reach her hand out to hold King’s hand. Panel 5: King is snapped from their trance. Panel 6: Vanita, holding King’s hand, smiles timidly. Vanita: A lot of magic may be lost, but…

King (narration): After they heard what I had been through, I was a legend… Panel 2: Close up on King’s eyes. King (narration): ...But never a person. Panel 3: Smaller panel. King’s fist shakes. Panel 4: King raises their fist to the crowd, who go wild. King (narration): But if one must choose whether a legend of a person could change the world – let it be a legend. Panel 5: Wide panel. King is now thicker with muscle, facing off against an armored man. Both carry greatswords, which King wields with one hand. Around them are sounds and bodies at war. King (narration): That’s what I believed...even up to the battle with Richard. Panel 6: Wide panel, present day. We see a book by the blanket fort. King: But now…

  • Panel 1: Wide panel. We look down at King’s hands as they sit, legs crossed, on the floor under the blanket fort. King says, “Mister Wintergate never gave me a new name...only calling me ‘he’, ‘it’, or ‘his pet.’” Panel 2: Flashback, close-up. We only see Mister Wintergate’s hand and crooked smile as he leers over the viewer, shirtless. Panel 3: Present day. King clenches a fist. Panel 4: Very close up on King as they glare, recalling this memory. Panel 5: Vanita speaks up and draws King’s attention. Vanita asks, “Did ‘King’ as a name come after...Wintergate’s accident? Panel 6: We see King from behind their head, looking away. Part of the speech trails into the next panel. King says, “Yes. But it was a name I did not ask for. The voices of the desperate and downtrodden bestowed it upon me after they heard my story.” Panel 7: Flashback. King, younger, stands before an enormous crowd of people, all cheering with arms raised.

  • Panel 1: In this flashback panel, we see King cringing at their arm. The candle, part of the summoning circle, is still lit. King (present): “...I have hated this body ever since Wintergate forced me into it.” Panel 2: Present day. Vanita’s face softens as she looks at the Demon King. We cannot see his face. Panel 3: Flashback. We see Wintergate’s pale hand holding a book of magic open. On the pages are a picture of a demon and some text we cannot read. King (present): “When I had been reshaped, well...to cast the spell requires the name of the person you are transforming. And as soon as the deed is done - Panel 4: Zoom in on the text of the book from panel 3. We see a list of names, with one name turning into dust and flying away on the wind. King (present): “ - that original name is lost. Because the original is now gone.”

  • Panel 1: medium-close-up on Vanita as she sits in the blanket fort. “Reshaped?” she asks. In the remaining panels, King narrates over flashbacks. Panel 2: King is kneeling at the feet of a sorcerer with blonde hair in red robes. The sorcerer holds a magic book and smirks, hand outstretched. He has summoned King at his feet. King: “Yes. When I was brought here...Ma – Mister Wintergate used a powerful spell to mold my soul into a body. Panel 3: Close up on a demon’s tail. King: “I lost my tail -” Panel 4: Close up on the demon feet as King says, “ - my feet - “ Panel 5: Zoom out to see demonic wings as King says, “ - and most regrettably, my wings.” Panel 6: In this wide panel, we see King on the floor in the center of intersecting chalk lines. At each nexus where the lines meet, there are seven orange-red candles. King: “Wintergate used this spell to make me… ‘Perfect,’ meaning more like himself.”

  • All 3 panels are wide, and take place inside a blanket fort made of a blue blanket, green couch, and wood dining room chairs. Panel 1: Vanita looks to the Demon King and smiles. She says, “You know...I never got your name. I’m Vanita.” Panel 2: Wee see the view from behind King as they answer. The answer startles Vanita. King says, “...When I was summoned here, I was not given a name. The closest it came was “King” when I led armies. Panel 3: Medium close-up on King. They say, “I don’t even remember my name from my life in the Pit. It got erased when I got summoned here, and reshaped.”

  • Panel 1: Wide panel. Vanita stands next to the dining room table, a stack of books next to her. She reads one of the books with the updated notes. Through the window into the kitchen, we see King brushing oil on the chicken and humming. Panel 2: Vanita slides the roasting tray into the oven. Behind her, King leans forward to try and peek at what she is doing. Panel 3: Medium shot on Vanita and Demon King from the waist up as they stand in the kitchen. Vanita holds her phone, and King watches, confused. Vanita says, “Set an alarm for one hour.” The phone says, “One hour. Starting now.” Panel 4: Wide shot. Vanita goes into the living room and crawls into the blanket fort. King is walking from the kitchen to follow.

  • Panel 1: Vanita and the Demon King gaze down to the raw whole chicken in its packaging (off-panel). King asks, “...Is that a chicken in the sack?” Vanita says, “Mmhmm.” Panel 2: Same shot as panel 1, but a bit closer on Vanita as she looks startled. King says, “As penance for my error, I wish to cook it for you.” Panel 3: Wide panel. Vanita leans back to look up into King’s face. King is smiling. Vanita says, “You really don’t have to. Besides, you may not even know how the oven works - “ And King says, “I can prepare it. I will let you handle the equipment. Fair?” Panel 4: Larger panel. We see the chicken, still in its wrapping, on the counter. Vanita and Demon King are in the shot, but the view is zoomed in on their hands. Vanita brushes her hair nervously as King claps. Vanita says, “...Ok. Fair.” King says, “Good! Now, where do you keep the butter?”

As tends to be the case with the best paranormal comics of this type, the main draw is that it's all about the relationships-- relationships that aren't exactly steamy, they're more caring...."
