Chapter: Vanita and the Demon King

  • Panel 1: Wide panel. Vanita stands next to the dining room table, a stack of books next to her. She reads one of the books with the updated notes. Through the window into the kitchen, we see King brushing oil on the chicken and humming. Panel 2: Vanita slides the roasting tray into the oven. Behind her, King leans forward to try and peek at what she is doing. Panel 3: Medium shot on Vanita and Demon King from the waist up as they stand in the kitchen. Vanita holds her phone, and King watches, confused. Vanita says, “Set an alarm for one hour.” The phone says, “One hour. Starting now.” Panel 4: Wide shot. Vanita goes into the living room and crawls into the blanket fort. King is walking from the kitchen to follow.

  • Panel 1: Vanita and the Demon King gaze down to the raw whole chicken in its packaging (off-panel). King asks, “...Is that a chicken in the sack?” Vanita says, “Mmhmm.” Panel 2: Same shot as panel 1, but a bit closer on Vanita as she looks startled. King says, “As penance for my error, I wish to cook it for you.” Panel 3: Wide panel. Vanita leans back to look up into King’s face. King is smiling. Vanita says, “You really don’t have to. Besides, you may not even know how the oven works - “ And King says, “I can prepare it. I will let you handle the equipment. Fair?” Panel 4: Larger panel. We see the chicken, still in its wrapping, on the counter. Vanita and Demon King are in the shot, but the view is zoomed in on their hands. Vanita brushes her hair nervously as King claps. Vanita says, “...Ok. Fair.” King says, “Good! Now, where do you keep the butter?”

  • PAGE 71 Vanita and the Demon King in this page apologize for their behavior. The atmosphere is shadowed and somber. Panel 1: Close up on King. King says, “I should have asked for your permission before I began writing those addendums in the margins. Sometimes I must remember…” Panel 2: Close up on Vanita. She says, “…I’m sorry, too. For yelling at you like that. I turned into my father there, and you didn’t deserve that.” Panel 3: Medium shot, King smiles softly at Vanita and holds their arms open. Vanita looks at them and lifts a hand, ready to step forward.

"Charlie and Clow also has some touching relationships and very satisfying and thoughtful plot twists that will keep you reading. As tends to be the case with the best paranormal comics of this type, the main draw is that it's all about the relationships-- relationships that aren't exactly steamy, they're more caring...."
