Character: arnold wintergate

  • Panel 1: Wide panel. We look down at King’s hands as they sit, legs crossed, on the floor under the blanket fort. King says, “Mister Wintergate never gave me a new name...only calling me ‘he’, ‘it’, or ‘his pet.’” Panel 2: Flashback, close-up. We only see Mister Wintergate’s hand and crooked smile as he leers over the viewer, shirtless. Panel 3: Present day. King clenches a fist. Panel 4: Very close up on King as they glare, recalling this memory. Panel 5: Vanita speaks up and draws King’s attention. Vanita asks, “Did ‘King’ as a name come after...Wintergate’s accident? Panel 6: We see King from behind their head, looking away. Part of the speech trails into the next panel. King says, “Yes. But it was a name I did not ask for. The voices of the desperate and downtrodden bestowed it upon me after they heard my story.” Panel 7: Flashback. King, younger, stands before an enormous crowd of people, all cheering with arms raised.

"Charlie and Clow also has some touching relationships and very satisfying and thoughtful plot twists that will keep you reading. As tends to be the case with the best paranormal comics of this type, the main draw is that it's all about the relationships-- relationships that aren't exactly steamy, they're more caring...."
